If you’re looking for which foods help you avoid a herpes outbreak (cold sores are caused by the herpes virus btw!), then you’re in the right place!
I came in contact with the herpes virus 2012 and have learned through experience that the key to preventing herpes outbreaks naturally through your diet is to be aware of two simple things: lysine and arginine.
Actually, I could say ONE simple thing: the ratio of lysine to arginine in any given food.
If you’ve ever experienced a herpes-related outbreak (HSV1, HSV2, Shingles, EBV, “cold sores/fever blisters”), it could have been triggered by food you ate that had too much arginine and not enough lysine.
(And if the food didn’t initiate the outbreak, it could have very well contributed to making it a LOT worse.)
Lysine and arginine are are amino acids, and are in the foods we eat.
In the body, they compete for absorption, so as long as the food you’re eating has MORE lysine than arginine (or at least an equal amount of each), then the food is not likely to cause an outbreak. WOOHOO!
I discovered this little gem for myself, put it to the test, and YEP! It worked!
Did I have to give up some of the foods that I absolutely love? Wah – yes. (I miss you peanut butter.)
Was it worth it?
ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY!
I love peanut butter, but not as much as I love being outbreak-free thank you very much!
Once I had this knowledge, I started looking up the lysine and arginine content of different foods all the time.
I would either Google it or go on the USDA Food Data Central website, but then I would have to scan and sort through all of the nutritional data they provide, and then calculate the ratio.
All the nutritional info they show is great, but I did’t need it, and it made it hard for me to figure out what I really wanted to know: How much lysine vs arginine does this food have? In other words, can I eat it?!
(UPDATE: Now we have AI, which is giving WRONG INFO in search engine queries so be extra careful!!)
That’s when I decided to compile just the data I needed; the lysine and arginine content, and then add in the ratios for each.
No more stressfully searching through slow-loading websites or trying to sort through a ton of unnecessary data. This was a gamechanger!
It helped me so much I decided to package it nice and pretty and offer it to you all here, to save you the time and frustration I went through. : )
So here it is!

To be clear, the Lysine to Arginine Quick Reference Guide contains specially designed Lysine to Arginine Food Ratio Charts. The charts don’t contain any of the other nutritional data such as protein, carbohydrates, etc.
It only contains the vital info you need to decide the following:
- Whether you can consume a certain food by itself (for the foods with more lysine than arginine)
- Whether you need to combine that food with a high lysine food to balance it out (for those that have slightly more arginine than lysine)
- Whether you might be better off avoiding that food entirely (for the foods that are super high in arginine compared to lysine. I call these the herpes party starters lol.)
It was specially designed for people like you and I who are trying to consume high lysine, low arginine foods in order to prevent herpes outbreaks.

Iβm just a regular person who learned the hard way that too much arginine causes herpes outbreaks (p.s. cold sores are herpes too!). I found real solutions that have worked for me to prevent outbreaks for years. My mission is to share everything I’ve learned with as many people as possible, to prevent them from going through the same pain and suffering I did. Because once you know what to do, you won’t have to suffer anymore!
